Free EAN-13 barcode generator

For goods that came without a factory barcode, make an in-store EAN-13 starting with 20 here, download it as SVG or PNG and print labels. Such a code only works inside your own shop: retail chains and marketplaces usually ask for a code issued by GS1 Uzbekistan.

Make the code right here

Type an item number — the 20 prefix and the check digit are added for you. The code is drawn in your browser and sent nowhere.

What kind of code

1 to 10 digits. Give every item its own number and keep a note of which number went to which item.

The name and price appear on printed labels only.

2000000000015

Print labels

How many labels

Labels on an A4 sheet are cut out with scissors. In the print dialog pick your printer and set the scale to 100%; on a roll printer the paper size must match the label size. Before printing a whole roll, print one label and test it with a phone scanner.

The short answer

When your own code is enough and when you need a GS1 code

Sources: GS1 Uzbekistan — the sole authorised issuer of unique GTINs in Uzbekistan (page in Russian); the GS1 prefix list — 200–299 for restricted circulation, 478 for Uzbekistan. Checked on 4 October 2026.

How to number your items

In-store codes are only as good as your numbering. Set a rule once and you will not get lost even with hundreds of items.

How an EAN-13 code is built

A code from the generator has thirteen digits:

  • 20 marks it as an in-store code;
  • the next ten digits are your item number, padded with zeros on the left (1 → 0000000001);
  • the last digit is the check digit, which the scanner uses to confirm the code was read correctly.

Here is how the check digit works. For item number 12345 the first twelve digits are 200000012345. Counting from the right, the first, third, fifth and so on digits are multiplied by 3, the rest by 1, and everything is added up: 5×3 + 4×1 + 3×3 + 2×1 + 1×3 + 2×1 = 35 (the zeros add nothing). The number that tops 35 up to the next ten (40) is 5. The finished code: 2000000123455.

That is why a single mistyped digit or a worn bar makes the scanner reject the code instead of putting the wrong product in the basket. The generator’s “I already have 12 or 13 digits” mode checks your code in exactly the same way.

Labels a scanner can read

In BuySale

In BuySale the code and label come straight from goods-in

The generator is handy for a couple of items. In shop software it happens by itself, and the code stays on the product card.

A code in one tap

For an item with no code the app creates one starting with 20: 20, a shop number, an item number and a check digit. A code already taken in your shop is never handed out again.

The label right away

Save the goods-in entry and print its label: 1, 4, 8, 12 or 24 copies, with or without the price. On an A4 sheet or a roll: 40×30, 58×40, 58×30, 43×25, 30×20 mm or a size you type in.

The phone is the scanner

At the till the phone camera reads the code. An unknown code is attached to a product on the spot, and one product can hold several codes.

Jewellery gets QR tags

A linear code does not fit a narrow tag, so in a jewellery shop the tag carries the karat, size, weight, stone and a QR code.

More detail: the barcode and label guide and using the phone as a scanner. Labels and receipts both print through the browser’s print dialog — the app does not connect to the printer directly.

What the generator does not do

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a barcode I made myself in my shop?

Yes. To recognise goods inside your shop, an in-store code starting with 20 is enough: any EAN-13 scanner or phone camera reads it. Just give every item its own number and keep a list.

Can I supply a supermarket or a marketplace with this code?

No. Chains and marketplaces usually require a GS1 code issued to the manufacturer — in Uzbekistan that is GS1 Uzbekistan, and the codes start with 478. A code starting with 20 may belong to a different product in another shop’s database.

What is the check digit?

The last, thirteenth digit of the code. It is calculated from the first twelve, and the scanner uses it to check the code was read correctly. The generator adds it for you and checks it if you enter all 13 digits.

Why does the code start with 20?

GS1 reserves numbers starting with 20–29 for restricted circulation and never issues them to manufacturers, so an in-store code starting with 20 can never match a factory code. In a BuySale grocery shop, 21 and 22 are taken by scale labels.

Which printer can I use for the labels?

Any printer: an ordinary one prints 24 to an A4 sheet for cutting with scissors, a label printer prints onto a roll (40×30, 58×40, 58×30, 43×25, 30×20 mm). Set the scale to 100% in the print dialog and, for a roll, a paper size equal to the label size.

SVG or PNG — which should I use?

SVG keeps the bars sharp at any size — best for design software and label templates. PNG is an ordinary image (468 × 152 pixels), handy for Word or Excel; do not stretch it.

Are the codes I make saved anywhere?

No. The code is made in your browser and never sent to a server; close the page and nothing remains. Download the file and note which number went to which item.
